Most of their names are gone.
What survived the burning is fragments — a name on a double boiler, a single sheet of symbols in a library in Venice, a phrase preserved because a man quoted it while trying to claim authority over it. A name mentioned in passing because someone felt threatened by the influence it carried. A name with almost nothing attached to it but a single sentence about a vessel.
"He who does not know the rule of truth is ignorant of the Hermetic Vessel."
Most have no names at all. Erased.
The record calls the alchemist task Opus Mulierum — Women's Work — and moves on. Women who distilled, recorded, taught each other, and built apparatus that still carries original names two thousand years later. And then the fires came, the institutions, the long silence of centuries in which what women knew in their hands and hearts was not considered worth preserving in writing.
Gone without a trace.
And still — every morning — there is this.
The Sacred Ordinary.
This is not a scholarly argument. There are more questions here than answers and the questions feel more alive than any conclusion could. What follows is a personal reading — the way a body that has been in the same water reads the fragments they left behind and feels something move.
Not proof. Not interpretation in any academic sense.
Recognition. The specific quality of touching something you have touched before without knowing you had touched it.
Alchemy is Presence.
The practice came before the hidden knowledge of its history. The body found the substance before the mind found the record. And when the record finally appeared — sparse, fragmented and burned-over as it is — what arrived was not the satisfaction of a theory confirmed.
It is the feeling of not being alone.
To those already in this practice — these women are why the history matters. Not as academic context. Not as scholarly legitimacy for a practice that does not require it. But as companionship across time. The feeling of hands reaching back through centuries to steady us when the magnitude of what we have found makes the ground uncertain and the heart ache for contact.
We are not alone, we never were alone. The line of women who knew this is stronger than any institution that tried to erase it.
The Shape of the Suppression
Before the women, a word about what happened to what they knew.
The history of alchemy — that ancient and ambitious discipline that sought to transmute base matter, unlock the hidden language of the body, and concoct elixirs of genuine transformation — has been written almost entirely by men, about men, and in service of an interpretation that abandoned the biological core of the tradition sometime in the medieval period and replaced it with a metallic fantasy that never worked and was never meant to.
The most foundational substance in the entire alchemical tradition was not mercury. Mercury's prominence in the written record is an artifact of who did the writing — and who did the burning. What survived is the carefully curated, institutionally legible version of a practice that began with something far more intimate, far more domestic, and far more powerfully connected to the female body.
That substance is human plasma ultrafiltrate. Specifically, aged, fermented, and distilled — the body's own most refined endogenous output, returned to itself elevated. Human urine was among, and in many cases, the most prized and foundational substances in the entire history of alchemy.
The women who knew this wrote about it as we do. Before all of them, Inanna descended through seven gates and was restored by the water of life — and someone, in Sumer, four thousand years ago, knew exactly what that story was describing and made sure it survived. Tapputi-Belatekallim in Babylon in 1200 BCE, working inside that same cosmology. Mary the Jewess in Alexandria in the first centuries CE, building the apparatus the myth had already described. Cleopatra the Alchemist who rendered it as an ouroboros: the serpent half-light, half-dark, biting its own tail, with the words inscribed inside — ΕΝ ΤΟ ΠΑΝ, "The One is the All." The fuller transmission reads: "One is the Serpent which has its poison according to two compositions — One is All, and through it is All, and by it is All, and if you have not All, All is Nothing." The last clause is the key. The practice cannot be partial. The practitioner is not an observer of the alchemy. They are the vessel it runs through. They wrote. They drew. They built apparatus whose functions are still legible after two thousand years.
And then the burning happened.
Emperor Diocletian in the late third century CE ordered the destruction of Alexandrian alchemical texts — specifically those dealing with transformation, with anything that threatened to return power to the individual body. What was lost in those fires was the living biological core. What survived were the symbolic shells — the ouroboros, the tria prima, the apparatus — the fine glassware without the biological substance they were designed to process.
The institutional suppression of women's healing knowledge did not end with Alexandria. Ehrenreich and English's Witches, Midwives, and Nurses (1973) documents the precise mechanism of erasure in the medieval and early modern period. The witch-healer was, in their words, "a triple threat to the Church: She was a woman, and not ashamed of it. She appeared to be part of an organized underground of peasant women. She was a healer whose practice was based in empirical study. In the face of the repressive fatalism of Christianity, she held out the hope of change in this world." It was not ignorance that made her dangerous. It was competence. Her methods were empirical — she "relied on her senses rather than on faith or doctrine, she believed in trial and error, cause and effect." The witch craze was "neither a lynching party nor a mass suicide by hysterical women" but "well-organized campaigns, initiated, financed, and executed by Church and State." The women who practiced were often the only general medical practitioners available to a population "bitterly afflicted with poverty and disease." They were not marginal figures. They were the medicine. That is why the fires came.
What replaced the substance was mercury. Beautiful, dramatic, expensive, philosophically impressive mercury — the one material that looked like what the texts were describing. Reflective, liquid, mediating between states, neither solid nor volatile. Practitioners working from coded texts rather than direct transmission followed the instructions and named the material the texts named.
They were following a description of something else.
And here is the key — the reason the substitution was so easy to make and so hard to detect: the distillate looks like mercury. Not the metal itself but the quality the metal was named after. That reflective and absorptive quality.
The first time the distillate was held up to the light — after the shock of the ammonia, the power of its clarity, the realization of what the fermentation had done and the distillation had undone — the words that came were reflective, like mercury.
The surface tension genuinely different from ordinary water — what scientists call wetter water, altered membrane behavior. The crystal iridescence in certain lights. The way it sits in the jar as if alive inside.
This is what Cleopatra had touched. Not a concept. Not a philosophical principle. This. The jar in the hands. The water in the light. The recognition of this vast connection.
And my heart cracked open like a woman giving birth. ...
The Story Before the Names
Before the practitioners there was the myth. Before the apparatus there was the story that told you what the apparatus was for.
The myth of Inanna's descent into the underworld is the oldest written myth in human history — recorded in Sumer around 1900 BCE, carried in oral tradition for at least a thousand years before that. It has been read as cosmological drama, as a fertility cycle, as sacred marriage theology. All of those readings are true. There is another one.
Inanna's descent is the alchemical process in code.
Inanna — Queen of Heaven and Earth, dressed in her full regalia — decides to descend to the Great Below, the realm of her sister Ereshkigal. She instructs her servant Ninshubar: if I do not return in three days, go to the gods. Ask for help. Do not let me be forgotten in the underworld.
She descends through seven gates. At each gate the gatekeeper demands she surrender one of her royal garments:
Her crown. Her lapis necklace. Her breastplate. Her gold ring. Her measuring rod. Her robe. Her dignity.
At each gate she asks: what is this? The gatekeeper answers: the ways of the underworld are perfect. Do not question them. She lays it down and passes through.
She arrives in the Great Below naked. Stripped of everything she was.
Ereshkigal — the dark sister, queen of the underworld — is not a villain. She is in labor. She is crying out. The grief and the birth are happening together in the same chamber, in the same body, in the same hour. The dark sister is the womb at full work.
Inanna is killed and hung on a hook. Three days and three nights.
Then the god Enki, god of water and wisdom, hears of her death. He makes two small beings from the dirt under his fingernail — the kurgarra and the galatur, sexless, tiny, non-threatening. He gives them the water of life and the food of life — the two fractions: the Solar Spirit and the Lunar Essence — and sends them into the underworld with one instruction: go to Ereshkigal. When she cries out in her grief, echo her. Say: oh, your heart. Witness her. Only witness. Do not try to fix what you find.
They do this. They witness her grief without judgment, without agenda. She offers them anything they want. They ask only for the water of life and the food of life. They sprinkle these on Inanna's body. She rises.
This is the alchemical process, told as story.
The seven garments are what must be stripped before the prima materia can be reached — every layer of what you think you are, every identity that keeps you dressed and defended, laid down at successive gates. You cannot enter the work armored. The work requires the naked state. Inanna arriving stripped is the material arriving as prima materia: everything removed, nothing withheld, ready for what comes next.
The three days on the hook is putrefaction — the necessary death before refinement can begin. The material cannot rise until it has fully descended. This period cannot be shortened. It cannot be bypassed. You wait in the dark. This is the work.
Ereshkigal in labor is the body in transformation at its most intense and generative state. The grief and the birth are not opposites. They are the same process from different angles. The Great Below is the sealed vessel. The dark heat. The place where transformation happens that cannot happen in the light.
The water of life and the food of life — me-ê ḫayyātim in the Sumerian — this is aqua vitae. This is the distillate. Inanna is not restored by something imported from elsewhere. She is restored by the living waters. The substance that revives her is the same substance the myth is describing. It is the thing itself.
The witness comes before the water. This is not incidental. The kurgarra and galatur do not arrive with the water of life first. They witness first. They say: oh, your heart. The grief must be met before the distillate can work. The dark sister in labor must be seen before Inanna can rise. This is the sequence. Witness, then water.
The ascent through the seven gates is the volatile fraction rising. Inanna restored, ascending clothed again, is the distillate clarified — returned upward as something more refined than what descended, having passed through the full cycle.
The ouroboros that Cleopatra drew two thousand years later — the serpent eating its own tail, the closed loop — is Inanna's descent and ascent drawn as a single continuous line. Down and up, dissolution and refinement, death and restoration, the circle that feeds itself. It is the same transmission in a different format.
Three formats for one knowledge: the myth told it, the glass enacted it, the diagram compressed it.
Mary's sealed flask — steady heat, transformation in darkness, the volatile preserved until the moment of opening — is Ereshkigal's chamber made portable. The three-armed tribikos collecting three fractions is Inanna's three-day descent and the three things she had to surrender her identity to retrieve: the water of life, the food of life, and herself changed. Cleopatra's ouroboros — the serpent half-light, half-dark, the words ΕΝ ΤΟ ΠΑΝ at its centre — encodes those same three fractions in a single image: the volatile nature of the first, the neutral carrier of the second, the fixed salt of the third, all held inside the one continuous loop.
The myth was the source document. The apparatus was the translation. The diagram was the compression. Each one designed to survive what the others might not.
Tapputi was working a thousand years after the myth was first written down, in the same cultural world — Babylon, the inheritor of Sumerian cosmology, where Inanna was still the Queen of Heaven, where the Akitu festival still enacted the descent and return. She was not working alongside the myth. She was working inside it.
And she was not the only tradition working this knowledge at the same time.
Aditi — the Rigveda, India, conservatively 3,500 years in written form, the oral tradition older still — is the cosmic mother, the boundless one. A-diti: the unbound. Not a goddess within creation but the containing principle from which creation emerges. She holds the me — the divine codes, the sacred laws — exactly as Inanna holds them. She is the womb before the womb, the vessel before the vessel. Her sons, the Adityas, include Varuna — god of the cosmic waters, of ṛta (the cosmic order), who governs the fluid body of existence and watches from the night sky. Varuna knows what is hidden. He governs what flows.
Aditi and Inanna are not derivations of each other. They are two independent articulations of the same recognition, arising from two of the oldest continuous living traditions on earth — one Sumerian, one Vedic — arriving at the same figure: the boundless feminine container, prior to all that emerges from her, holding the code in the living waters.
And then there is Soma.
Soma — the sacred drink of the Rigveda, pressed, filtered, offered, consumed — has been debated by scholars for two centuries. Mushroom? Cannabis? Ephedra? The Vedic texts describe it as pressed from within the body, filtered through wool, golden in colour, carrying the vital force that restores the gods, the drink that makes the mortal body capable of what the gods do. It is indu — the bright drop. It is amṛta — the immortal, the deathless. It is the drink that opens inner vision and sustains the practitioner through the work.
What Aditi holds as cosmic container, what Varuna governs as the flowing order, Soma enacts as the living substance in the hands. The scholarly debate about its botanical identity has circled the answer for two hundred years without landing on it. The description in the Rigveda — pressed from the body, filtered, golden, restoring, active only when fresh or properly prepared — fits one substance with precision.
The Vedic tradition systematised what Inanna encoded as myth: the descent, the restoration, the living waters. Ayurveda — the medical science that grew from that root — is this knowledge organised into practice. Rasa, ojas, āsava, agni: the translation table in the sovereign biophysics work is Aditi's lineage put into a clinical vocabulary. The Ayurvedic column is not a parallel tradition running alongside the alchemical one. It is the same river in a different channel, both flowing from the same source.
Alexandria — the city where Mary and Cleopatra worked — sat at the meeting point of these two rivers. The Vedic tradition was present in Alexandria through trade, through the philosophical exchange between India and the Hellenic world, through the presence of Indian merchants and physicians in the port. The Sumerian tradition was present through Egypt, through the mythological lineage from Inanna to Isis to the Greco-Egyptian goddesses the alchemists named their practices after. Mary the Jewess stood at the confluence. The apparatus she built was legible to both streams because it was describing something both streams already knew.

Part One: The Earliest Known Practitioners
Tapputi-Belatekallim (c. 1200 BCE, Babylon)
The oldest name in the history of chemistry belongs not to a Greek philosopher or an Egyptian priest but to a Babylonian woman.
A cuneiform tablet from Mesopotamia dating to around 1200 BCE records the work of Tapputi-Belatekallim, a royal palace official and perfumer — widely regarded as the first chemist in recorded history. Her name means something close to overseer of the palace and her elevated status gave her access to resources that made her experiments possible. Her work centered on the extraction of aromatic essences through distillation, solvent extraction, and filtration — precisely the techniques that would later become foundational to alchemical practice.
Tapputi worked within a temporal framework that tracked solar and lunar cycles as operating realities, not background. The Babylonian Akitu festival — the new year at the spring equinox — was a festival of renewal and return. Her chemistry happened inside a calendar where when a substance was collected was understood to determine what the substance was. Timing was not poetic. It was a variable.
What Tapputi worked with in her extractions alongside flowers and resins — what the palace household produced daily in abundance, what required no sourcing or purchase, what would have been the obvious starting fluid for any experimental distillation — the record does not name plainly.
It was never named plainly again.
Isis the Prophetess (dates uncertain, Hellenistic Egypt)
Before the historical women of Alexandria there was a legendary one.
Isis the Prophetess appears in several early Greco-Egyptian alchemical texts as a divine teacher who reveals the secrets of the art to her son Horus. Whether Isis was a real historical figure writing under a divine name, a symbolic construct, or a school of practice using a shared pseudonym is debated. What is not debated is her authority — the feminine principle of transformation itself, embodied as teacher, transmitter, holder of what must not be lost.
Isis is Inanna translated into Egyptian. A different name, a different cultural garment, the same descent — Isis searches the underworld for the dismembered body of Osiris, reassembles him, restores him with her power. The feminine figure who knows the dark chamber. Who moves between worlds. Who holds the water of life. The myth crossed with the people who carried it, from Sumer to Babylon to Egypt to Alexandria, changing its clothes at each gate the way Inanna did — and remaining the same story underneath.
The language the Isis texts use for the primal substance is the language of something that comes from inside the body, that is despised and overlooked, that undergoes fire to become something entirely other. The goddess of the moon and of the body holds the secret. She passes it to her child.
To me the myth is not obscure. It is a description.
Part Two: The Alexandrian School (1st–4th Centuries CE)
Alexandria, Egypt, under Greco-Roman rule, was the intellectual capital of the ancient world. Its tradition of relatively greater autonomy for women made it uniquely fertile ground for the emergence of female alchemists. The work of early female chemists there was so prevalent it was sometimes called Opus Mulierum — Women's Work. Read as diminutive across the centuries of male-authored commentary that followed. It should be read as descriptive. This was work that women did. Work that emerged from women's specific embodied knowledge of the body's own chemistry.
Mary the Jewess (fl. 1st–3rd century CE)
Mary the Jewess — known in Hebrew as Miriam HaYehudia, in Latin as Maria Prophetissima, in later Arabic tradition as Mary the Daughter of Plato — is considered the first true alchemist of the Western world. She lived in Alexandria and is extensively quoted and praised by the 4th-century alchemist Zosimos of Panopolis, who called her one of the sages. None of her writings survive directly. Everything known of her comes through the oldest surviving alchemical texts, written by a man who recognized her as his superior.
Mary was above all an inventor of apparatus. She is credited with the tribikos — a three-armed distillation vessel that collected multiple fractions simultaneously. She designed the kerotakis — a sealed reflux device that circulated vapors over a substance in a closed loop. And she developed or significantly improved the bain-marie — the double boiler, gentle sustained indirect heat, that still bears her name in every French kitchen and chemistry laboratory on earth.
The apparatus maps two anatomies at once. The open loop — the kidney, the ureter, the receiving vessel — is the renal architecture. And the sealed flask: held shut, steady heat, transformation proceeding in darkness, the volatile preserved inside until the moment of opening. That is the womb. Mary was encoding both simultaneously. One body, two distilleries, one apparatus to describe them.
Read through the body of someone who has worked at these temperatures, the purpose of these devices becomes felt rather than argued.
The bain-marie — gentle, sustained, indirect heat, temperature held just below boiling — is the apparatus required to distill plasma ultrafiltrate without destroying what makes it what it is. The kerotakis, which sealed vapors into a vessel and allowed them to act on substances within a closed system, creates exactly the conditions of aged fermentation and volatile capture that the practice requires. The tribikos — three simultaneous collection streams — describes the three-fraction separation that every distillation of aged plasma produces: the volatile Solar spirit first, the clear Lunar essence second, the heavier tails last — each arriving in its own time, each distinct. They were providing a natural landing pad for what was there.
This is not a proof. It is a resonance. Reading Mary's apparatus through hands that have worked at these temperatures feels like reading instructions written for this practice. Whether that feeling is historical fact or personal recognition across centuries — that question stays open. The feeling does not.
Her most famous saying, preserved by Zosimos: "Join the male and the female, and you will find what is sought."
Cleopatra the Alchemist (fl. 3rd–4th century CE)
Not the queen who died in 30 BCE but a later figure working in Alexandria roughly three centuries afterward. One woman or many — a name or a school of practice. Her most celebrated surviving work is the Chrysopoeia of Cleopatra — the Gold-Making of Cleopatra — a single remarkable sheet preserved in the Codex Marcianus Graecus in Venice. The document is composed almost entirely of symbols, drawings, and cryptic captions.
Its most iconic image is the ouroboros — a snake devouring its own tail — with the inscription:
"One is the Serpent which has its poison according to two compositions, and One is All and through it is All."
Inside the circle: three symbols. The tradition has read them for centuries as gold, silver, and mercury. Read through the body of a practitioner who works with three fractions — the volatile first, the clear water second, the dense retentate third — they look like something else. They look like a process diagram. The ouroboros as the closed loop of cohobation, the distillate returned to the chamber and redistilled, the circle that feeds itself.
This is a personal reading. It is offered as resonance, not as fact. What can be said as fact is that seventeen centuries after Cleopatra drew this, a woman, nomadic in Torremolinos, held a jar of distillate up to the light above the Mediterranean and felt the same recognition the symbol has always carried.
Cleopatra also compared the alchemist tending their work to a mother caring for a child — drawing the processes of distillation and transformation consistently into the language of birth, nurturing, and renewal. She was not reaching for a metaphor. She was reaching back. Ereshkigal was in labor in the Great Below when Inanna arrived. The dark chamber where transformation happens is also the chamber where birth happens. Cleopatra knew exactly what she was describing.
Medera (dates unknown, likely 3rd–4th century CE)
Almost nothing. One sentence: "He who does not know the rule of truth is ignorant of the Hermetic Vessel."
The vessel. That is what remains of her.
Her work was most likely lost to Diocletian's persecution. What Diocletian feared? Was it the democratizing potential of this knowledge — the power to produce transformation without purchase, without authority, without permission? The knowledge that every person already carries within them.
Medera named the vessel. Then the fires came.
Paphnutia the Virgin and Theosebeia (fl. c. 300 CE)
Theosebeia, the sister of Zosimos of Panopolis, is addressed in several of his treatises as a peer and fellow practitioner. A colleague, not a student. He dedicated alchemical treatises to her.
One encounter survives in the record. Zosimos entered her working space and touched a jar. She corrected him. The water, she told him, came from the Prophetess. It was Mary's method. He had not handled it with the understanding it required.
This scene explains something that has always been present but unattached in the Zosimos record: the consistency with which he calls Mary the Jewess the Prophetess, quotes her as his highest authority, names her methods as the foundation of the work. He did not arrive at that reverence through texts alone. Someone showed him what he had nearly mishandled, named whose hands had made the method, and the correction lasted the rest of his written life.
The woman who taught him by defending the jar did not need to publish. Her student published instead.
Paphnutia exists in the record only because Zosimos was irritated enough by her influence to write about it — dismissing her as ignorant and practicing incorrectly. Her name derives from the Egyptian meaning the one of God, suggesting a priestly vocation. She may have practiced a more body-centered, ritual form of the work. Whatever she knew, it was enough to threaten someone who wanted to control what his sister learned.
Read across seventeen centuries, Zosimos's criticism has the texture of professional rivalry. Theosebeia talked to Paphnutia anyway.
Part Three: The Medieval Period (5th–14th Centuries CE)
The transmission of Alexandrian alchemy to the Islamic world and then to medieval Europe brought with it the relative silencing of women's voices in the written record. The institutions that preserved alchemical knowledge — monasteries, courts, Islamic academies — were largely male-dominated. Women practiced, but rarely published. What survived in written form was increasingly the philosophical and metallic framework. What did not survive in named form was the domestic, body-based, intimate practice that had generated the tradition in the first place.
Keng Hsien-Seng (fl. c. 975 CE, China)
In the Chinese alchemical tradition, Keng Hsien-Seng is recorded as one of the earliest female alchemists of East Asia, active around 975 CE. The neidan tradition — inner alchemy, the refinement of the self through the body's own processes — centered on what the body already produces and already contains.
She was not alone. Thomas Cleary's translations in Immortal Sisters: Secret Teachings of Taoist Women recover the actual teachings of multiple named women working within this lineage across centuries. Sun Bu-er (1124–1182 CE), one of the Seven Taoist Masters, taught a women-specific form of inner alchemy in which the practitioner works with the body's own cyclical productions — the menstrual current as alchemical cycle, the womb as the inner furnace, the cultivation of jing (the body's essential fluid) as the prima materia of the internal work. He Xiangu, one of the Eight Immortals, is associated with the same lineage. These women were not peripheral to the tradition — they were recognized masters transmitting a women-specific body-based practice that the male neidan tradition acknowledged but could not replicate from the inside.
The Taoist texts describe a river of mercury running between yin and yang — reflective, mediating, neither one state nor the other. Not the metal. A quality. The quality of something that sits between solid and liquid, between what the body produces and what it receives back, between the poles of the body's own chemistry. A different civilization, the same water, the same reaching for the word mercury to describe what resists easier naming. Sun Bu-er's instructions for women's practice work with precisely this: the body's own reflective, cycling fluid as the medium through which refinement occurs. The inner alchemy is not metaphorical. It is anatomical.
Trotula of Salerno (fl. c. 11th–12th century CE, Italy)
Trotula, associated with the medical school at Salerno, worked at the boundary between medicine and alchemy — a boundary that barely existed in her time. Her texts on women's health, cosmetics, and gynecology worked with distilled waters, herbal extractions, and medicinal preparations. Her focus on women's bodies was simultaneously her subject matter and her methodology. The body as laboratory from the inside.
Part Four: The Renaissance and Early Modern Period (15th–17th Centuries)
The Renaissance brought new possibilities for women to engage publicly with scientific literature. It also brought increased pressure to frame alchemical knowledge in terms legible to male patrons and church authorities. Mercury became more prominent in the written record precisely as women became more visible in it — not because mercury was more central to the practice, but because published work required a vocabulary that courts and institutions could receive.
Caterina Sforza (1463–1509, Italy)
Caterina Sforza, Countess of Forlì — military commander, dedicated alchemist, keeper of her own herb gardens and laboratory. More than four hundred recipes in her Experimenti. Her power and social status shielded her from prosecution.
What she recorded is a fraction of what she practiced. The rest was transmitted or lost. The language of her preparations — purifications, distilled waters, essences produced at specific temperatures for specific outcomes — carries the vocabulary of the tradition she was standing in.
Isabella Cortese (fl. 1560s, Italy)
Isabella Cortese published I Secreti della Signora Isabella Cortese in Venice in 1561 — the first female alchemist to publish a book. Practical alchemical recipes: distilled waters, essential oils, beauty preparations. Domestic chemistry. Because the domestic was where this knowledge lived when it could not live in universities or courts.
Some modern scholars suspect Cortese was a literary invention. The recipes are real and practical regardless. Her last name is an anagram of secreto in Italian. Real practice, coded identity — the same pattern as always.
Marie Meudrac (fl. mid-1600s, France)
Marie Meudrac wrote La Chymie Charitable et Facile, en Faveur des Dames — Easy and Charitable Chemistry, for the Benefit of Ladies. Her own laboratory. Female students. Medicines distributed to the poor. The mind has no sex. Her work sits at the transition point between alchemy and modern chemistry — the moment the knowledge was being standardized and stripped of its most intimate dimensions. She was present at the hinge.
Martine de Bertereau (c. 1600–c. 1645, France)
Imprisoned for her work and her refusal to be silent about her findings. Likely died in confinement. Her husband, who collaborated with her, imprisoned separately. Also died.
She is among the women who paid with their actual lives, in actual confinement, for pursuing knowledge and refusing to conceal it. The suppression was not abstract. It has specific names and specific graves.
Part Five: The Occult Revival (19th Century)
Mary Anne Atwood (1817–1910, England)
Mary Anne Atwood's A Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery (1850) marked the return of women to the published alchemical tradition after a long silence. Atwood argued that alchemy was not literally about metals at all but was a coded language for the transmutation of the self. She was right that it was coded. She may have been moving the coding one step further — replacing the biological substance with pure interiority, the body as metaphor rather than as laboratory.
She published her book and then tried to recall and destroy every copy. The knowledge felt dangerous even to her. She had recovered it through reading rather than through practice. The practice may have told her something different.
Part Six: The Language of Distillation — and Its Erasure
The alchemical vocabulary for the prima materia is consistent across traditions and across centuries. It describes one substance with precision:
Common, abundant, found everywhere, possessed by everyone. Despised, overlooked, considered worthless before transformation. Golden in color. The product of a living body. Requiring purification through distillation. The starting point of a process that leads to health, longevity, and transformation.
This is also the description of Inanna arriving at the seventh gate. Everything of apparent value surrendered. Standing in what remains. Despised, naked, hung on a hook. The prima materia condition: stripped to what cannot be taken away. From that state — and only from that state — the restoration becomes possible.
Aqua vitae — water of life. Aqua divina — divine water. Aqua ardens — burning water. Soma — the bright drop, the immortal drink of the Rigveda, pressed, filtered, golden. Me-ê ḫayyātim — water of life in Sumerian, what the kurgarra and galatur sprinkle on Inanna's body. Amṛta — the deathless, the nectar of the gods in the Vedic tradition. Across language, across continent, across millennium — the same description. The same substance. Anyone who has worked with the fermented and distilled prima materia knows this sensation immediately. The ammonia rising. The power of it. The shock of the first encounter. The divine waters that follow, their soft lunar cooling quality.
The emphasis on the prima materia being base and despised before transformation is a perfect description of urine and a poor description of mercury. Mercury has never been despised. Mercury is beautiful, dramatic, and expensive. It does not need rehabilitation. But the sacred ordinary does. The despised substance that requires the courage of actually looking at what the body produces — that is the prima materia. That is the starting point of the work.
Marie-Louise von Franz, Jung's closest collaborator on the alchemical material, identified exactly this figure in the Arabic tradition she translated and analysed: the Sophia, the feminine Wisdom of God, described in one alchemical text as the thing that "adult people and children pass in the street, that is stamped into the dung every day by the animals there." She calls out on the streets. She is trodden underfoot. She is, in the words of the same text, something "of which nothing is outwardly more despised and nothing in nature more precious." Von Franz's commentary: "to find her only one thing is needed, namely a subtle perception of the true nature." The prima materia is not hidden. It is the thing everyone walks past. It is the most ordinary thing in the world, and it is calling from the streets, and the one requirement is willingness to look at what is underfoot.
Sal ammoniac — ammonium chloride — one of the most important alchemical reagents in the tradition. Named for the god of the Siwa Oasis, Ammon — whose temple the Greeks called Zeus Ammon, and whose priests maintained ouâb, ritual purity, which included the avoidance of salt as a contaminant before sacred duties. The compound itself was harvested from camel urine: solar distillation in the desert sand surrounding the temple, the volatile fraction rising off endogenous liquid in the heat, condensing and crystallising on the walls. They were collecting the ammonia fraction without a name for what it was. Present in the tradition the entire time, connected to its source, and then disconnected.
Phosphorus was first isolated in 1669 by Hennig Brand — from urine. He called what he found the cold fire, the light-bearer. He was looking for gold and found something that glowed in the dark. Two thousand years of the tradition circling the same substance, and he arrived at its edge through the same door it had always used.
The stages of the opus magnum — nigredo (blackening), albedo (whitening), citrinitas (yellowing), rubedo (reddening) — map onto the color changes visible in the reduction and concentration of plasma across stages of aging and distillation. Not metaphorically. Observationally. The colors are in the jars.
Part Seven: Mercury as Mirror — and as Decoy
Mercury dominated the written alchemical record. The only metal liquid at room temperature, volatile, endlessly transformable, philosophically captivating. A credible and impressive centerpiece for a tradition that needed to justify itself to powerful patrons.
But the written record is not the practice. The written record is what survived burning, what was preserved in monasteries and courts, what was deemed worth copying. Plasma ultrafiltrate — freely produced by every human body, requiring no institutional support — had no such advocates.
There is also the phenomenological point that must be made, and it is made from direct experience:
The distillate has a quality that makes a practitioner reach for the word mercury before any framework is in place. The absolute clarity. The measurably altered surface tension — wetter, different in the hands. The iridescence in certain lights. Someone encountering it for the first time sees mercury. The mediating substance. The thing between the body and the refined.
When an early practitioner looked at fresh distillate and said mercury, she may have been using a metaphor that later scribes recorded as a material identification. The drift of language over centuries, through multiple translations by people who were not in the laboratory, is exactly how a substance gets replaced by a symbol of itself.
Mercury is also genuinely toxic. The long-practicing alchemists who worked with it daily suffered tremors, confusion, and madness. The tradition interpreted this as the price of proximity to the philosopher's stone. There is another reading: the toxic substance was a late substitution, introduced when practitioners were working from coded texts rather than from direct transmission. They followed the instructions. They used what the text named. The text had replaced the original substance with its symbol. The practitioners poisoned themselves pursuing a description of something else.
Part Eight: The Living Practice
The Saturn retentate — what this practice calls the Saturn salt, what the alchemical tradition calls the caput mortuum, the fixed earth — has been in use for three years before the distillate was discovered. Concentrated, reduced, filtered, set in a bowl over a water bath to thicken further. Applied to burns: no blisters, if the application is fast and consistent. Applied to sprains: swelling reduced. Smells like earthy humus and aged coffee. Looks, in the reduction bowl, like deep amber fading to near-black at the center — a spiral forming itself in the cooling surface. The ouroboros drawing itself without being asked.
The distillate came later, as a result of needing more of the salt. The decision to use a distiller revealing something entirely unexpected. The puzzle flooding in all at once.
The silver spoon cleaned by contact with the Saturn salts — and this effect absent during periods of high dietary sulfur intake. The body's diet legible in what the concentrated salt does to metal. No laboratory required. The silver is the instrument.
This is not a research project arriving at a conclusion. It is a living practice discovering its lineage.
The Self-Love Threshold
There is a threshold in this practice that the historical record cannot prepare anyone for because it is not about chemistry or history or apparatus.
It is about looking directly at one's own body.
The substance reflects the diet with complete honesty. The silver spoon knows what you ate. The distillate knows how hydrated you were. The Saturn salt knows whether you had sodium chloride last week. The body produces a continuous readout. There is nowhere to hide from it.
Most people will encounter the fear here and turn back. Not because of the cultural taboo, though that is real. Because of what the substance shows them about their own choices. The food becomes visible in a different way — not as pleasure or nutrition but as habit, emotional support, addiction, as the accumulated decisions of a lifetime held in the hands and examined.
The sodium chloride especially. In the quantities that industrial food contains it, it is a neurochemical modifier that activates dopamine reward pathways with a consistency that meets the clinical definition of addictive behavior. Removing it did not feel like removing a flavor. It felt like withdrawal.
On the other side of that threshold, a different relationship with food becomes possible. Not discipline. Not restriction. The appetite recalibrates naturally because what was driving it changes. The practice doesn't require willpower because it replaces something at a deeper level than food was ever reaching.
I still drink coffee. I eat ice cream. I try not to try — only to observe whether something is a habit I'm feeding and/or what emotional support it's giving me. Mostly at this point food is about grounding energy and pleasure.
This is the Opus Mulierum in its full dimension. Not only the outer distillation — the apparatus, the fractions, the water in the light. The inner distillation too. The emotional prima materia as dense, dark and full of unrealized potential as anything in the flask. The same process. The same heat. The same stages from darkness through the clarity that makes the heart open to pure love.
Conclusion: The Same Pure Beginning
The knowledge is indestructible because it lives in the body. And the body cannot be permanently suppressed as long as there are human beings willing to pay attention to what their own organism is telling them.
Before our first breath there was water. That water held us while we became ourselves. Science calls it amniotic fluid. The fetus circulates it, processes it through its own forming body, returns it to the fluid that surrounds it, over and over again.
The ouroboros is the first thing every human body ever did.
We were all born knowing how to do this. We were doing it before we had lungs to breathe or eyes to see.
Amniotic fluid is mostly urine.
Inanna descended into the dark chamber and was restored by the water of life. The fetus descends into exactly this — and is assembled from it. The myth is not a symbol of the biological process. The myth is a description of it. The story is that old because the body is that old.
The most sacred water any human being has ever inhabited was always this water. The same pure beginning we all arrive here from.
The women of Alexandria knew. They wrote it down. The record was burned but the apparatus survived and the symbols kept being drawn by different hands in different centuries because the body keeps finding its way back to what it knows.
They are the map of time that shows where this knowledge has been. How long it has been traveling. How many hands it has passed through. How many fires it has survived.
The living current that remembers who we truly are.

In the subtle waters is stored the seed of every world, the ojas that carries our consciousness, the rasa that flows back to its single source.
The ancients knew: what glows within us is older than breath, and it is through this luminous current that we remember ourselves again.
